Hundreds of beehives destroyed
Detectives on the state’s south coast are conducting inquiries after hundreds of beehives were destroyed in the Batemans Bay area.
A number of beekeepers contacted police from Batemans Bay Local Area Command yesterday (Monday 18 June 2012), to report a total of 750 hives had been sprayed with an unknown poison.
As a result, the beehives – located on properties on Western Distributor, Iron Bark Ridge and Clyde Ridge Roads, and worth an estimated $150,000 – were destroyed.
The majority of the bees inhabiting the hives were also killed and the honey rendered inedible.
Local investigators are continuing their inquiries in a bid to identify and track down those responsible.
Anyone who witnessed the incidents or any suspicious in the vicinity of the properties is urged to contact Batemans Bay Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
