Moruya swimmer still missing

Hope is fading for a Sydney man who disappeared after getting caught up in "treacherous" surf conditions while swimming with friends on the NSW south coast.

Picture shows surf conditions at Bengello Beach on Sunday (4 Sep) shorty after the search was suspended, were similar to the conditions when the man went missing. The group from Cabramatta were camping at a popular camp ground next to the beach, according to fellow campers no one else was swimming at the time of the incident.

The 20-year-old, from western Sydney, was swimming with three friends at Bengello Beach, Moruya, on Saturday morning when he screamed for help.

Search suspended for missing swimmer - Moruya

A search has been suspended for a man who has been missing in seas off the South Coast since yesterday.

The 20-year-old man was swimming with three friends at Bengello Beach, at Moruya, when the two girls, 17 and 18, and a 23-year-old man left the water about 11.30am (Saturday 3 September).

The man was heard to call for help and he was seen being swept out to sea. He disappeared a short time later.

Water Police, along with members of the Broulee Surf Lifesaving Club and Moruya Life Saving Club initiated a search yesterday, joined by vessels from NSW Maritime and the Volunteer Rescue Association, and South Care helicopter; however, the man couldn’t be found.

Due to extremely hazardous conditions the air and sea search was suspended after 3pm. Patrols of the 5km beachfront continued overnight.

Today’s search involved the same marine vessels, however, about 11.30am the search was again suspended due to dangerous surf conditions.

It’s planned that a further search will begin tomorrow about 9am.
