Man charged over high-speed police pursuit - Shoalhaven

A man has been charged after allegedly leading police on a high-speed pursuit on the state’s south coast.

Just before 10pm yesterday (Thursday 4 August 2011), officers attached to Shoalhaven Highway Patrol were patrolling the Princes Highway, Falls Creek and spotted a black Holden Commodore sedan travelling north.

Police approached the vehicle and conducted a valid speed check before signalling for the vehicle to stop.

The Commodore slowed and pulled over to the side of the road.

Officers exited their vehicle and approached the Commodore and it allegedly accelerated away.

A pursuit was initiated and the car was followed to South Nowra – reaching speeds of up to 80km/h above the legal sign-posted limits.

Police terminated the pursuit as it approached South Nowra due to the manner of driving.

About 11.50pm, police patrolling Central Avenue, South Nowra spotted the Commodore and pulled it over.

The driver – a 19-year-old Cardiff man – was arrested and taken to Nowra Police Station, where he was charged with Police pursuit - not stop - drive at speed (Skye’s Law), drive vehicle recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous; and drive while disqualified from holding a licence.

He has been granted bail and is due to appear in Nowra Local Court on Monday 29 August 2011.
