They would also like to thank the canteen ladies who worked tirelessly all weekend keeping up with the huge numbers of people always present in the shed to watch the action and catch up with friends.

CAMPDRAFT

In the four years we’ve been running campdrafts at Curlewis it’s rained four times, so why were we surprised when this time we were DELUGED and forced to postpone? It took very many phone calls and much re-arranging but we managed to still field a full book of entries three weeks down the track – an excellent result considering we were running the day before the Warwick Gold Cup started, and clashed with a Hunter draft as well. The standard was still very high with some Warwick competitors riding at Curlewis and driving through Sunday night to start in Warwick on Monday…… now they would have to be mad.

ABCRA CAMPDRAFT COMMITTEE OF THE YEAR

And the winner is…. CURLEWIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!

What a thrill it was to be presented with this award at the ABCRA National Finals in Tamworth. All those sleepless nights, endless hours on the phone, checking and rechecking entries and cattle availability and all the rest of it suddenly faded into insignificance when our name was announced as the inaugural winners of this National award. This was a competitor driven award so it’s particularly gratifying that they noticed our extra efforts to run a good event. The lovely trophy we received is hanging on the shed wall for all to admire. Now to keep up the standard……

DOG TRIAL

Word travels fast on the dog trialling circuit, and numbers were well up on last year’s trial, with most of the first timers making the return trip and bringing more with them. It was a great weekend made all the better by bush poet Paddy Ryan entertaining on Saturday night. Gary’s Camp Ovens were just too popular and sold out necessitating a quick BBQ to fill the gap. Everyone got fed in the end, so no problems.

GYMKHANA

Another numbers up event, with the most commonly asked question being “when can we have another one?” It seems that there is a definite spot for this fun low-key day we started last year as a trial. This was the first horse competition run on the new sand. It was great.

CURLEWIS PUBLIC SCHOOL

Needing some funds to send their kids on an excursion, the Curlewis Public School ran their first school horse sports day on the grounds and it was another resounding success for the sand arena. They fielded 85 riders and were thrilled with the outcome of the day. I’m sure they will be looking to do it again next year.

MEMBERSHIP

Is now due for the current financial year so if you are a member or would like to become one contact Alison on 67 441380 and she will sort it. Our monthly meetings happen at 7pm on the 3rd Thursday of every month, in The Shed at the grounds, so feel free to come and join us.

SPONSORS AND SUPPORTERS AND CATTLE DONORS

Are an invaluable part of our ongoing success and there are too many to list without fear of missing someone.

We get people’s time, expertise, equipment, livestock, sand and good will.

These people are the lifeblood of our community and we are totally humbled by their confidence in us.

Thanks to them we now boast a fully sanded, state of the art campdraft facility which is the envy of all those who come and compete here. Because of them we’ve been able to positively assist the youth of the area and if that’s all we ever do then we’ve done a good thing.

After a full day’s trialling, and completion of the ever popular dog high jump, Paddy easily kept the attention of a sizable crowd from the back of a ute parked out the front of the shed.

As usual the camp oven dinner was in great demand, with delicacies such as Sheepdog’s Pie, Irish Wolfhound Stew, Red Dog Casserole and Puppy potatoes (they’re the little ones) all popular.

Some lovely local cattle tested the ability of working dogs from as far away as the Far North Coast, the Hunter Valley and Central West.
Winner of the Maiden Trial after two rounds was Jennifer Burrell’s dog Cove. Jim was also a return contestant and winner of the dog high jump for the 2nd year running.
The Open event was won by North Coast trialler Jonathon Randle and Sarah. The photographer got so excited at the impending three way photo finish that she forgot to keep snapping and missed the shot which would have definitely made the front page of the local paper the next day.

We started with a nice easy ring program to get the day going, then progressed to the fun stuff in the afternoon with equipment kindly loaned for the day by the Gunnedah Pony Club. Volunteer helpers also materialized from within Pony Club ranks and we thank them all very much for their contribution towards the success of the day.

We had Tiny Tots on leads and old buffers with dodgy knees and all sorts in between, and a good assortment of events to test the skills and developing skills of all concerned. There was a lovely lunch in the break, a very vocal peanut gallery with plenty of advice for the old buffers, some dads with very fast legs, and one bloke who appeared to randomly launch himself into the time trial course on foot whenever a kid said “now where do I have to go again?” There was lots of laughter, endless chatter, no tears and no falls, so I have to conclude that the day was a great success.
